Places as Experiences
2023–ongoing
Photography series, digital and analogue
This ongoing body of photographic work is inspired by Gary Snyder’s writing on “becoming placed” – the ways in which we learn to inhabit and belong to a place.
“We experience slums, prairies, and wetlands all equally as ‘places.’ Like a mirror, a place can hold anything, on any scale. I want to talk about place as an experience and propose a model of what it meant to ‘live in place’ for most of human time, presenting it initially in terms of the steps that a child takes growing into a natural community. (We have the terms enculturation and acculturation, but nothing to describe the process of becoming placed or re-placed.)”
