Tracing Lights
2023
This body of work began with looking at Rotterdam from the perspective of an Asian woman living between different cultural landscapes. It marked the beginning of my practice with analogue photography, working with a range of SLR and medium-format cameras.
In 2023, a photographic series from this research was presented at Rotterdam Photo. I wrote this text in response to the festival’s theme, “Freedom.”
I grew up in an urban environment and got in touch with nature as an adult.
After that, I travelled across the continents of the world and eventually arrived at the rural landscape of my home country.
I have lived a careless life on the road and then a tamed one within the small worlds of scientific research. I looked for freedom everywhere. In the end, I could not tell whether I was free or not free.
When I think of such a thought, I look out of the window into the allotment garden, or at the roadside during a walk. Nature shows its traces and energy everywhere. “Thank you for revealing your presence,” I murmur in my mind and click the shutter.
