Photography series and photobook
This body of work began with looking at Rotterdam from the perspective of an Asian woman living between different cultural landscapes. It marked the beginning of my practice with analogue photography, working with a range of SLR and medium-format cameras. The initial photographs emerged from encounters with Rotterdam’s motor roads, industrial infrastructure, and fragments of cultivated and wild landscape.
The work developed into the photobook Counterintuitive, bringing together photographs made across different countries and geographical contexts, from east to west and north to south. Despite their different locations, the scenes can appear strangely ubiquitous when viewed through a prior mindset.
In 2023, a photographic series from this research was presented at Rotterdam Photo. The work later developed into the photobook Counterintuitive, bringing together these encounters with the city through sequencing and the physical form of the book. The photographs consider how a place can be perceived from a particular cultural and embodied position, and how an unfamiliar way of looking can make the ordinary appear strange.
